The first steps to become a fully qualified surf lifesaver you will need to hold a BlueCard (this process can take weeks to months to process) and be an Active member of Kawana Surf Club. From here you will need to gain your SRC or Bronze Medallion.
The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) is a stepping stone towards gaining a Bronze Medallion and provides participants with basic skills and knowledge of first aid, rescues, and CPR, enabling them to patrol as part of a patrol team. This is the perfect pathway from Junior Activities to patrolling ranks or for parents/guardians who wish to assist with water safety during nipper programs, sports carnivals or training. A prerequisite to this course; is that you must complete 200m Pool swim in 5mins or less.
The Bronze Medallion is the pinnacle of Surf Life Saving patrolling awards, equipping holders with essential skills and knowledge in surf awareness, rescue techniques, radio communication, CPR, and first aid. As a Bronze Medallion holder, you will be responsible for patrolling the beach, ensuring the safety of the public, and may be called upon to perform rescues using a board or tube, as well as carry out preventative actions. A prerequisite to this course; is that you must complete 400m Pool swim in 9mins or less.
Please check out minimum requirements for eligibility.

BRONZE MEDALLION COURSE
There is no upper age limit and we regularly have participants into their sixties so this really is a course suitable for anyone.
If you are under the age 15 but over the age of 13 you can still be a lifesaver. That course runs at the same time as the Bronze Medallion and is called 'Surf Rescue Certificate'.
A prerequisite is that before assessment day you need to complete an unaided 400 metre swim (goggles/masks permitted) in nine minutes or less, in a 25 metre or over pool. Before the candidate can participate in any surf activities a 200m swim in under 5 minutes must be completed and observed by either our training team or a swim instructor.
Not a great Swimmer
That’s ok! Off the beach and behind the scenes, there are literally hundreds of other jobs and opportunities available. Whether it’s a radio operator, surf sports coach, a club Committee Member, a BBQ coordinator or a junior activities age manager, there’s a role for everyone at Kawana Waters Surf Club.
Contact us and check out SLSQ's interactive guide that walks you through the prerequisites and course requirements.
